If your natural hair color is brown or black and you’ve recently dyed it blonde, there’s likely a lot of orange in the strands. The lightest Wella toners won’t be able to cancel out the brassiness completely. Instead, opt for a richer beige shade to lift your color. These shades are also great if you want hair that’s light but not quite platinum.
It’s okay if you don’t have any extra toner mixture left to apply. This is just a way of making sure you don’t waste any leftover. Let down more hair to tone when you finish with the base layer.

The good news is, in both cases, whatever the cause of yellow hair, it can be easily balanced out with the correct toner. The major and minor tone could be anything from a 0 to a 9, and to balance orange hair, you will typically look for a 1 or 8 in the formula. This 1 or 8 could be either the major or the minor tone, depending on how much orange toning is required through your client’s hair. If there’s a lot of warmth to knock out, try making 1 or 8 your major for a flattering shot of coolness.
A cooler, crisper dark blonde with a seamless root shadow. Wash your hair every 2-3 days with a sulfate-free shampoo. This will prevent your toner from fading too quickly. You can also rinse your hair with water and apply some conditioner, which won’t strip the color. Balancing Yellow Tones in Brown Hair

Apply Wella T18 Toner and Wait 20-25 Min
If your client’s hair is on the yellow end of the orange spectrum, a purple shampoo can help to correct and neutralize their brassy hair. This is because violet sits opposite yellow on the color wheel, allowing it to cancel out those unwanted tones and leave strands beautifully balanced. So, for those clients who do have hints of yellow, recommend they add INVIGO Blonde Recharge Cool Blonde Color Refreshing Shampoo to their kit. All they have to do is lather up, leave it to do its work for 2-5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
The easiest way to apply Wella toner is to mix 1 part toner with 2 parts developer. Pull on disposable gloves and clip up the top layers of your hair. Using the applicator brush, apply the mixture evenly from root to tip, working from one side of the layer to the other. Let down another layer and repeat the process until every strand is coated. Let your hair process for 20 minutes, then rinse it out and condition.

This way, the next time you can choose the same shade or go darker, otherwise, it will be harder to go lighter the next time. But, the great thing about having a major and a minor is that you’re able to add other hues in there too. For example, if you want to correct orange tinges while creating a golden blonde hue, you could try adding Koleston Perfect 8/38 to your formula. Leave it in for a little longer each time, eventually working up to 10 minutes. Color theory is simpler than it sounds – especially when you refer to the color wheel . Simply put, whichever colors sit opposite one another on this wheel can cancel each other out. For example, blue neutralizes orange, green balances red, and purple tones down yellow hues. That means, in order to target yellow, you need a touch of violet in your formula. If you have darker hair and/or want to go platinum blonde, you need to bleach your hair before applying toner.
Your goal is blurring the contrast between the gray roots and the rest of your hair. That’s why a color even close to the rest of your hair will look good. If you are not sure of your shade, choose the lighter one.
