If you need to cover gray roots, we have a portfolio of root products, from temporary to permanent. A few thoughts to keep in mind before you shop and try. As you can see, my hair after using T18 with the developer is definitely lighter, but not super blonde. Koleston Root Touch Up 10 minutes Permanent Color Cream. This product requires a processing time of 10 minutes and lasts longer than temporaries. That seems to be the best approach; I would also suggest giving the hair a very thorough washing.
For extra protection, rub a bit of conditioner into your hair from the middle of your head down to the tips. After you get out, wash your hair as soon as you can with your sulfate-free shampoo. Starting with a small section of hair on one side, paint the toner on evenly from root to tip. The strands should look darker and wetter once the toner is fully on.
DYE YOUR HAIR
Color Touch 6/0 + 7/0 + 8/0, blended down the root and over the previously lifted blonde. It’s not just blondes who battle with brassy yellow tones. On brown hair with blonde highlights, too much warmth can be neutralized with the right toner. From brassy balayage to creamy blonde highlights, Nina Nears’ client underwent a mane makeover that featured a surprisingly simple formula. First, orange tones were lifted out with root-to-tip strokes of BlondorPlex + 6%, and then Color Touch 6/0 + 1.9% was applied in between for soft, subtle lowlights. The good news is, for each of these causes there’s a toning formula to fix it up.
For a more dramatic look (like the platinum blonde I had last summer!), you really need to bleach your hair first. Less than 20 volume won’t lighten your hair enough, and 30 or 40 volume developer may damage your hair. You need to mix Wella toner with a developer before applying it to your hair. I have warm skin tones, so I’ll likely stick with Wella T15, T11, T27, or T35 moving forward. These are the best Wella toner colors for warm skin tones.
Toning Hair from Yellow to Ash Blonde
You’ve just learnt how to dye your hair at home. Apply the toner + developer solution from the mixing bottle onto your hair. I chose T18 this time because I wanted an ash tone to get rid of the orange hues in my brassy hair. Reapply your toner every 5-6 weeks to maintain your color. Toner will typically last 2-8 weeks, but you might see your color start to fade before that. Since it’s a simple and relatively cheap process, and isn’t quite as hard on your hair as bleaching or dying, you can tone again after about a month.
Now, let’s look at how the color wheel impacts your chosen shade. In the Wella portfolio, each hue is numbered to show the depth, followed by a digit that denotes the major tone then, often, a minor tone. As seen on the left, colors with a 6 after the dash will have a violet tonal direction. As violet is the complementary color for yellow, you can decide whether this 6 should be the major or the minor, depending on how yellow strands are.

Scrunch any leftover mixture through your hair with your hands. Focus on your roots and the back of your head, which are often the hardest parts to hit with the applicator brush. Remember to keep your gloves on through this process so you don’t stain your hands.
What color Wella toner should I use?
I recently wanted to get rid of the orange hues in my hair, so I used the Wella T18 toner to neutralize the brassiness. That way, you can at least get the hang of applying some color, making parts, seeing how a shade matches your actual color. It may not be where you wind up long term, but you can choose a starting place. There is a great temporary option for you – Koleston Root Touch Up 3 seconds Spray. It is especially useful and quick on the part line and washes out when you shampoo.
After washing out the bleach, scrunch a towel gently through your hair. Choose T10, T18, T14, or T28 to get a pale or ash blonde shade. These lightest, whitest shades will get you to a platinum color if your hair is already a lemony blonde. If your hair is still brassy and orange, wait on using this light toner, because it won’t be strong enough to noticeably change the shade of your hair. There are two key reasons why hair might be yellow.
You will need to bleach your hair blonde and then use a Wella T18 with the developer. Their target shade was a warm dark blonde or brunette, but the warmth has become too prominent. For the same reason, only use purple shampoo or purple conditioner, not both.
Work from one side to the other, using a mirror to make sure you don’t miss any sections. Mix 2 parts developer with 1 part toner in a bowl. If you have long hair, several inches past your shoulders, use the whole bottle of toner. Fill up the empty bottle twice with developer and pour it into the same bowl. If your hair is shorter, just below or at your shoulders, you can use half a bottle of toner and twice as much developer.
